Lexington-Fayette County (Kentucky) Health Department

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department (LFCHD) seeks a Commissioner of Health to serve as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer leading public health for Lexington, Kentucky, a vibrant, diverse mid-sized city of more than 320,000 people. Lexington is home to the several universities, including the University of Kentucky, that has the number one ranked
medical center in the state, and is a level one trauma center. Aside from Lexington being voted one of the best places to live in the US, Kentucky was voted #1 in the nation for having the most favorable response in the handling of the Coronavirus Pandemic (US News and World Report).

Public health has never been more front and center than during the COVID-19 pandemic. This position provides an opportunity to make meaningful and lasting changes in public health as
the community moves beyond pandemic response. We seek a physician leader who is experienced in management of core public health services and is ready to lead the department and community forward in the future.

The mission of LFCHD is “helping Lexington be well”. The Commissioner of Health supports this mission by managing department efforts in data sharing, policy development, assessment, and

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department (LFCHD) is an accredited, independent public health agency. Led by its Commissioner of Health, LFCHD maintains a strong relationship with
the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Public Health, UK medical professionals, the local medical and public health community, the city of Lexington and the Kentucky Department for
Public Health. Our partnerships offer a wide variety of opportunities for the commissioner to connect in academic and medical circles, as well as with businesses and community organizations.

Candidates for this position should be knowledgeable and experienced in public health, preventive medicine and/or public administration and possess a comprehensive knowledge of public health programs. The Commissioner of Health must, by law, be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in Kentucky. As CEO, the commissioner will manage officer and staff level employees in administration (finance, HR, communications, etc.) and in public health operations. The commissioner will also serve as Medical Director of LFCHD, which has a robust public health clinic. The commissioner reports to the Board of Health and is responsible for the overall direction of the health department.
